September Activity Report

Quincy Police Department
School Resource Officer

The School Resource Officer program began on the first day school, September 3, 2002.  The School Resource Officer (SRO) maintains his main office in the Quincy High School, where he shares his office with the school district nurse.

The first month has been spent responding to school district related calls and attempting to get settled in to the new job and facilities.

The SRO is currently in the process of setting up a computer link with MACC dispatch in Moses Lake through the new fiber optics system.  This connection will be a new pilot program for MACC dispatch to determine if the rest of the Grant Counties emergency service agencies be connected by fiber optics.  By having this link at the high school, the SRO will be able to complete reports while on school district property instead of having to leave and complete the daily paper work at the Quincy Police Department.

This computer connection, once completed, will also allow other Quincy Police Officers the ability to complete daily reports at the high school.  We hope the added police presence will be a deterrence and a way for Quincy Police Officers to meet the young people in our community in a more relaxed situation.

The SRO is also working closely with students to start a crime tip reporting line and a police web site that can be used to communicate to the public of Quincy.

During the first month, the SRO has been extremely busy.  He has split most of his time between the Junior High and High school.  The SRO has however, spent some time at the elementary schools, just having lunch with the children.

The following is a summary of the SRO’s calls for service for September 2002:

  • Crime Reports (calls for service):  42

  • Misdemeanor Arrests: 8

  • Felony Arrests: 1

Types of Crimes:

  • Assault: 4

  • Drug Possession: 3

  • Truancy: 7

  • Drug Delivery: 1

  • Threats: 4

  • Juvenile Runaway: 2

  • Minor in Possession of Alcohol: 2

  • Counseling: 8

  • Theft: 1

  • Burglary: 1

  • Sex Offense: 2

  • Warrants: 1

  • Suspicious (extra patrol): 8

  •  Crime Prevention Activity: 3

The SRO program, which has developed an excellent working relationship with the school district, has all ready paid off with excellent dividends.  Because of this partnership, several leads were developed in numerous burglaries and almost $13,000 worth of stolen property have been recovered.  One arrest has been made, and more will follow as the investigation develops.

In the coming month of October, the SRO program will continue to grow and become more in valuable with the partnerships and relationships it has developed.
