SRO Activity Report - October 2002

During the month of October, the SRO has been extremely busy.  He has split most of his time between the Junior High and High school.  The SRO has however, responded to the elementary schools for truancy, counseling, and crime prevention issues.

The SRO also took a group of four high school seniors to the criminal justice training commission in Burien, WA. for the Career Fair.  These students showed an interest in careers in the law enforcement.  During the fair, the students spoke with professionals from national, state, and local law enforcement agencies in the pros and cons about a law enforcement career.

The SRO also delivered reflective Halloween Safety bags to Grades K-4th grade and spoke with all of the Mnt. View student body about Halloween Safety.  The bags were donated by Grant County PUD.

Also during October, the SRO continued his effort in getting “Spillman” (Law Enforcement database) connected at the high school, which will aid in his day to day duties.

The SRO and one of the Police Sergeants attended a class, which will now qualify them to be School Safety Instructors.  In the future, a training schedule will be developed to utilize their training.

One incident in October stands out.  The incident occurred at the highschool and concerned the arrest of a former student, who was in the school with a concealed pistol.  This incident was fortunately handled without anyone getting hurt.  Vice-Principle Jack Peasley and Athletic Director Bill Alexander handled the situation extremely well and should be congratulated on a job well done.  For more details see the attached press release.

The increased number of misdemeanor arrests were caused by several assaults at the high school, where several students were not actually involved with the physical fight but were participating with words or other actions that may cause a fight.  This behavior is considered “disorderly conduct” under Washington State law.

Four of the “calls for service” were handled by the on-duty officer because the SRO was gone for training.
